My name is Matthew Klapper and have been a teacher for over twenty years. I attended school at Calvert Elementary, Calvert Middle and graduated from Calvert High School. I have had aquariums for the last 37 years and have supported anywhere from 1 to 10 aquariums in my classroom and spread across the school. I have always done this with my personal shoestring budget and help from the PTSA (and Christmas shopping trips online with my Dad)- But I need help this time. While I can secure the physical box to replace the lost aquarium, I cannot afford to rebuild it with the necessary safeguards to monitor a new system to reduce the chance of failure to an acceptable level. I refuse to rebuild a Saltwater Reef Aquarium that cannot avoid the failures of the past.
Aquariums have been my passion for decades and that passion translates into hundreds of opportunities for learning, excitement, and wonder. Please help me restore this valuable resource to Southern Middle School.
The Goal: Rebuilding & Improving the Reef System & Fund Maintenance Needs for Three Years
A $4.00 power strip that had hung in the stand of the aquarium for 8 years failed in a terrifying way on a Friday afternoon. Shutting the life support system down for the weekend started a cascade of death and ammonia that led to the the most depressing end. The worst tank failure of my life.
The aquarium fell while cleaning it in June, salt in the wound!
Two years of consistent care and increased monitoring in the summer months led to the best success ever in this aquarium. Having the failure occur on a Friday led to an end that was heart breaking and left me in search of a solution to these sorts of catastrophes.

This is the first time in 17 years that I have not had a Saltwater Reef Aquarium in my classroom at the start of school. These failures have been no less common; every three years or so since the beginning. Redundancy and monitoring need to be made more secure. This is the 21st century and there is technology that can alert me to changing conditions and interruptions in power. Monitoring 24/7 that will ensure any problems are addressed before there are any losses of the organisms in our care.
